I've been serious about writing all my life, ever since I was a primary school kid jotting stories in my notepad. This compulsive scribbling has so far earned me a Degree in Creative Writing and a Masters in Film Studies, and has led to me working in all kinds of roles in the publishing industry for over a decade.
Whether I'm working for magazines or the web, writing stories, essays, features, marketing or advertising copy, the process and the skills required are essentially the same. For me, all creative writing lights up the same areas of the brain - the fascination never ends, the plot thickens, the mystery deepens, the gravitational pull is inescapable, the puzzle always needs piecing together.
Effective writing is like a conjuring trick. For it to be successful, it needs to combine aspects of persuasion, psychology, music, art, conversation, craft, practice and perfectionism. Like all tricks, it also requires perfect timing. Spending ten years writing, subbing, commissioning and editing in the fast-paced commercial publishing industry has equipped me with the organisation, judgement and necessary skills to produce precisely what's needed, on time, with the mimimum of drama.
